Data and Limitations
Data Included
The ranking covers eligible papers published in the proceedings of AMCIS, ECIS, PACIS, and ICIS from 2021 through 2026. HICSS can be added as an option, see below.
The current data includes:
- 7,914 conference papers
- 23,792 author positions
- individual authors
- 2,226 institutions
An author position represents one author listed on one paper. For example, an author who published five papers accounts for five author positions.
What Is Counted
The ranking includes:
- Full research papers
- Short papers, including research in progress papers
- Teaching cases
The ranking does not include:
- Panels
- Professional development workshops
- Symposia
- Submissions that publish only an abstract, such as AMCIS TREO talks
These items are excluded because they are not published as full or short peer reviewed papers.
The paper type filter allows users to view full and short papers separately.
HICSS, an Optional Addition
The Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences is available as an extra option in the Conferences filter. It is turned off by default, so every headline figure on this site refers to the four AIS conferences unless you switch it on.
HICSS covers a wide range of disciplines beyond Information Systems, with tracks spanning engineering, health and government, which is why it is excluded by default. It is offered as an option because a great deal of IS research is presented there, and turning it on shows how much a ranking changes when the boundary of the field is drawn differently.
The HICSS data covers 3,614 papers from 2021 to 2025.
Special Note About PACIS 2022
The PACIS 2022 proceedings did not identify the type of each paper.
All 351 PACIS 2022 papers are included when All Papers is selected. They do not appear when the ranking is filtered to show only full papers or only short papers.
Coverage for 2026
The current data includes 1,054 papers from AMCIS, ECIS, and PACIS 2026.
ICIS 2026 will take place in December. Its papers will be added when the proceedings are published. At that time, the rolling window will move forward.
Movement Symbols
The movement symbol beside each rank compares the ranking currently displayed with the same ranking after removing the most recent year.
In the default 2021 to 2026 view, the symbols show how the addition of the 2026 papers changed each position. See the Calculation page for more information.
Institutions
The institutional ranking focuses on universities and independent research institutions.
The following types of organizations are not included in the institutional ranking:
- Companies
- Hospitals and health systems
- Government organizations
- Professional associations
- Research networks involving multiple universities
- Affiliations that list only a department without identifying its university
Independent research institutes that publish under their own names are included as separate institutions. Examples include the Fraunhofer institutes and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. They are not excluded or combined with a university.
Author Names
Author names are taken from the conference proceedings and then cleaned for consistency.
Academic titles and credentials are removed. Names published entirely in capital letters or lowercase letters are changed to standard capitalization.
Regions
Regions are estimated from each author’s institutional affiliation. These classifications should be treated as approximate.
When there is not enough information to assign an institution to a region, the institution is included only in the worldwide ranking.
Interpreting the Rankings
Individual ranks are approximate. A small difference in paper counts does not necessarily represent a meaningful difference between scholars.
The ranking measures conference research activity. It does not provide a complete assessment of research quality, impact, or the overall contribution of a scholar or institution.
Corrections
If you find a mistake in a paper count, author name, or institutional affiliation, please contact aliahmed@lsu.edu. We will review the underlying proceedings and make any necessary corrections.
Data Availability
The underlying data is available upon request for noncommercial research use.
